چکیده

Muscle fatigue represents a complex phenomenon encompassing various causes, mechanisms and forms of manifestation. Continuous monitoring of local muscle fatigue during performance of certain work is possible by measuring myoelectric activity of particular muscles by the method of surface electromyography. Biochemical and physiological changes in muscles during fatiguing contractions are reflected also in properties of myoelectric signals recorded on the surface of the skin above the muscle. It is well know that the spectral analysis of surface myolelectric signals, through the mean and median frequency values, is a valuable tool for the quantification of the electrical manifestations of muscle fatigue. Specifically, it has been demonstrated that during an isometric muscle contraction the power spectrum of the signal is progressively scaled towards the power lower frequencies. Although important results have been obtained in the past by assessing fatigue under static conditions, fatigue assessment during dynamic tasks is here taken into consideration because are likely more relevant to daily functions and clinical applications. In particular, the dynamic conditions were controlled by an isokinetic machine that allowed to compare the electrical manifestations of muscle fatigue during concentric and eccentric contractions. The purpose the our study is to evaluate the isokinetic principle in rehabilitation through time-frequency analysis to understand of muscle behavior during two modalities of contraction. Establishment of a protocol to test fatigue of the trunk muscles.

BACKGROUND Muscle fatigue has high relevance in human performance yet little research has evaluated how it should be assessed. OBJECTIVE To perform a pilot study to identify suitable methods of generating and assessing fatigue of the trunk flexor and extensor muscles. METHODS Sixteen university rugby players (mean (SEM) age 21.9 (0.2) years) were recruited and subjected to four protocols (A...

Measuring neuromuscular fatigue in cervical spinal musculature of military helicopter aircrew.

UNLABELLED Neck pain and muscle function in aircrew have received considerable attention. We hypothesized normalized electromyography (EMG) frequency would provide insight into appropriate methods to assess muscle fatigue in helicopter aircrew. METHODS 40 helicopter aircrew performed isometric testing that included maximal voluntary contractions (MVC) and 70% MVC endurance protocols of extens...

Fatigue-induced changes in phasic muscle activation patterns during dynamic trunk extension exercise.

OBJECTIVE To investigate the influence of fatigue on phasic muscle-activation patterns during dynamic trunk extension exercise. DESIGN Fifteen healthy volunteers performed dynamic trunk-extension exercise through a 30-degree range-of-motion (ROM) exercise to task failure at an intensity of 50% of maximum. Electromyography (EMG) signals were recorded unilaterally from the lumbar extensor, glut...

[Article] Electrical Manifestations of Muscle Fatigue During Concentric and Eccentric Isokinetic Knee Flexion-Extension Movements

The quantification of the progression of muscle fatigue during a sustained contraction is a valuable tool in several clinical applications, ranging from the evaluation of functional impairment to the development of specific rehabilitative and training protocols. In these fields, great importance is given to isokinetic contractions. The aim of this work was twofold: first, to propose signal proc...

Changes in the flexion-relaxation response induced by hip extensor and erector spinae muscle fatigue

BACKGROUND The flexion-relaxation phenomenon (FRP) is defined by reduced lumbar erector spinae (ES) muscle myoelectric activity during full trunk flexion. The objectives of this study were to quantify the effect of hip and back extensor muscle fatigue on FRP parameters and lumbopelvic kinematics. METHODS Twenty-seven healthy adults performed flexion-extension tasks under 4 different experimen...
